Gothic rock (ook wel goth rock of gewoon goth genoemd) is een stijl van rockmuziek die eind jaren zeventig voortkwam uit de post-punk. De eerste post-punk bands die overgingen op donkere muziek met gothic boventonen zijn onder meer Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus en the Cure.
Het genre zelf werd gedefinieerd als verschillend van post-punk door zijn donkerdere muziek en romantische teksten.
