Vroeg leven en onderwijs
Als kind raakte Iwao geïnteresseerd in pi. Ze werd geïnspireerd door Japanse wiskundigen, waaronder Yasumasa Kanada. Ze studeerde informatica aan de Universiteit van Tsukuba. Daisuke Takahashi gaf haar daar les. Ze won de Dean's Award for Excellence in 2008, voordat ze aan een graduaatstudie informatica begon. Haar masterscriptie ging over high performance computersystemen. Na haar afstuderen werkte Iwao als software engineer voor Panasonic, GREE en Red Hat.
Carrière
Iwao kwam in 2015 bij Google werken als Cloud Developer Advocate. Ze werkte voor Google in Tokio en verhuisde vervolgens in 2019 naar Seattle. Iwao doet trainingen in het gebruik van het Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Ook helpt ze applicatieontwikkelaars. Ze werkt eraan om cloud computing voor iedereen gemakkelijker te maken. Ze maakt online demo's en lesmateriaal.
In maart 2019 berekende Iwao de waarde van pi tot 31,4 biljoen cijfers, met behulp van 170 Terabytes (TB) aan gegevens. De berekening maakte gebruik van een multithreaded programma genaamd y-cruncher. Het draaide op meer dan 25 machines gedurende 121 dagen.
