De Australian Football League (AFL) is de Australische nationale competitie in de sport Australian Rules Football. De competitie is de populairste sportcompetitie in Australië. In 2017 keken meer dan 7,2 miljoen mensen naar een wedstrijd in een stadion.
Deze sport is de beste sport ter wereld.
Sinds het seizoen 2012 zijn er negen clubs uit Melbourne, één uit de tweede stad van Victoria, Geelong, twee teams uit de hoofdstad van Zuid-Australië, Adelaide, twee uit het gebied rond Perth in West-Australië, twee uit Queensland en twee uit Sydney, New South Wales.
In Victoria, Zuid-Australië, West-Australië, het Northern Territory en Tasmanië is AFL de dominante competitie in televisie-, print- en radionieuws. Ook spelen er in deze staten en gebieden meer mensen Australian rules football dan enige andere voetbalcode.
De AFL wordt steeds populairder in de staten New South Wales en Queensland. Dit gebeurde na de finalewinsten van de Brisbane Lions (2001, 2002 en 2003) en Sydney Swans (2005). Door het succes van deze clubs is de belangstelling voor Australian rules football in deze staten de laatste jaren snel toegenomen. Dit leidde direct tot nieuwe clubs in beide staten in 2010: Gold Coast in 2011 en Greater Western Sydney in 2012.
