Denholm Elliott

Denholm Mitchell Elliott, CBE (31 mei 1922 - 6 oktober 1992) was een Engels film-, televisie- en theateracteur. Hij speelde in meer dan 120 films en televisieprogramma's. In 1981 won hij de BAFTA Award voor beste acteur in een bijrol.

 

Vroeg leven

Elliott werd geboren in Londen, Engeland. Hij was de zoon van Nina (née Mitchell) en Myles Laymen Farr Elliott. Hij ging naar het Malvern College en volgde een opleiding aan de Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Londen.

 

Carrière

In de jaren tachtig won hij drie opeenvolgende prijzen van de British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) - Best Supporting Actor voor Trading Places als de vriendelijke butler van Dan Aykroyd, A Private Function en Defence of the Realm - en een Academy Award-nominatie voor A Room with a View. Hij werd ook bekend bij een breder publiek als de goedbedoelende maar versufte Dr. Marcus Brody in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) en Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Een foto van zijn personage verschijnt in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull en er wordt verwezen naar Brody's dood. In 1988 speelde Elliott de Russische mol Povin in de televisie miniserie Codename: Kyril.

 

Dood

Elliott werd gediagnosticeerd met HIV in 1987. Hij stierf in 1992 in zijn huis op Ibiza, Spanje, aan aids-gerelateerde tuberculose. Zijn weduwe richtte een goed doel op, het Denholm Elliott Project, ter ere van hem en werkte mee aan zijn biografie.
